5/14, Wednesday, 6:45 - 9pm @ NCJW, West Hollywood
WOMEN, ART AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Speakers include: Fadia Afashe and Amy Logan

Fadia Afashe bio:
Artist Fadia Afashe proudly describes herself not only as a painter, but a writer, activist, and Syrian patriot. A native of Damascus, Syria, Afashe studied art with the renowned Syrian painter Adnan Abed Al- Rahman and graduated from the Ismail Institute of Art in 2000. And she had many national and international exhibitions. While immersing herself in the art world, Afashe also pursed a degree in Criminal Law at the University of Damascus and graduated in 2003. Afashe used her law degree to engage in causes advocating women's rights. She wrote "Suspended" (2011), a documentary about women exposing how the laws of rape in the Arab world leave women unprotected and disenfranchised. At the rise of the Arab Spring in the Middle East, Afashe left Damascus for the United Stated to pursue a fellowship at the Humphrey School for Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, which she completed in May 2012. Fadia's art became part of her activism to free her country Syria, and to give a voice for people who can't speak up for themselves through her painting.Fadia had 2 shows in Los Angeles for her painting about the revolution in Syria.

Amy Logan;
Author of The Seven Perfumes of Sacrifice. A thriller about the search for the origins of honor killing and the divine feminine in the Arab world. On a mission to empower women and girls to create a world where both men and women thrive, Amy is a global women’s human rights activist and speaker, working through online campaigns, social media and collaborative partnerships, and speaking to audiences from Los Angeles to Turkey. As a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, she has done leadership coaching with Amnesty International, UNICEF employees in Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal, as well as endangered human rights defenders in Pakistan and Sudan. She has also consulted with UNESCO on ending honor violence. She is the Director of Content Marketing for Learning as Leadership, a 30-year-old leadership development and culture change organization. She coaches executives and consults with a variety of clients on marketing communications, content strategy, writing, and editing. Proud mother of a 12-year-old son, Amy enjoys dancing, hiking, biking and biohacking in the San Francisco Bay area. She is working on her next novel.

The Greater Los Angeles Chapter (USNC) for UN WOMEN is honored to welcome you to join our First Annual Women's Peace Walk.

Origins of Mother’s Day
In 1858, Anna Reeves Jarvis created Mothers’ Work Days in West Virginia to raise awareness of sanitation issues. During and after the Civil War, she continued these work days to promote the health of all combatants and enhance reconciliation. In 1870, Julia Ward Howe wrote the Mother’s Day Peace Proclamation, encouraging the use of June 2 as a day for women to come together to discuss “the amicable settlement of international questions.” The author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” was greatly troubled by the Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War. She declared “Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience”.

UN Women is dedicated to supporting women’s economic empowerment and political equality, ending gender-based violence, enhancing peace and security, and supporting the Millennium Development Goals. The US National Committee educates the public about UN Women’s work and advocates for full funding of its initiatives.

The recently formed Greater LA Chapter wants to work closely with like-minded organization and individuals to support these goals. We envision this silent walk through Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade as a way to reflect on our roles as Practitioners of Peace and Social Change.

Speakers and music will precede and follow the walk
